Ceramic Cookware: Is it Safe to Use?

Over the past several years, ceramic cookware has been given a negative reputation because of all the possible safety hazards but in actuality, it is a variety of cookware that has a lot of versatility.  Using this type of cookware will give the cook more options than the traditional types of pans do.

Safety

Basically ceramic cookware will only be as safe as the material from which it is made, which is where the controversy comes into play over its safety.  The controversy is over the materials and chemicals which are in the glaze and ceramic which is used to protect the ceramic cookware.  Does the glaze on the cookware contain lead is one safety issue.  If it does then any food that is cooked in the cookware, may have traces of the element, which is very hazardous.  Most of the ceramic cookware on the market today is made using a special body formula.  This makes the cookware more heat resistant and stronger for a long time.

Yes, lead is very dangerous but it will not pose a danger to the consumer if the ceramic cookware is sealed and created the right way.  One way to make sure that it is safe to use to look for a label on the package that guarantees the cookware has been manufactured in a controlled environment and has the acceptable levels of cadmium and lead. This means that it has been tested according to the standards set by the FDA.   If there is no label certifying this you can still use it for decorative purposes such s a container to hold large kitchen utensils.

Even if is labeled safe to use, if it has marred or scratched interiors, it can still be harmful to use because of the components in the metal that is beneath the ceramic glaze.  These harmful components could seep into the food being cooked in the cookware.

How easy is it to use

This type of cookware is extremely durable, does not get chipped or dented easily, and is scratch resistant.  Although you can get this in a variety of weights, it is lighter than most other cookware.  You can easily clean this cookware just with a sponge, mild dish detergent, and warm water.  Over time, it will not easily stain as other cookware.  To make sure that you can put this in the dishwasher or not, looks the USA ASTM standard mark.

Types, costs and availability

You can purchase ceramic cookware unglazed or glazed.  If you choose to get the cookware unglazed it will hold water and be porous.  The unglazed type is suited for boiling water and steaming foods.  The glazed cookware is non-stick and does not use any type of coating like Teflon and is generally used to fry and sauté foods.

You can find both kinds of ceramic cookware online, at stores that sell discount cookware, and kitchen store for a wide variety of prices.  In the United States, it is easier to buy ceramic cookware online because it is not as popular here.
